About Banshan

Baoshan lies in the west of Yunnan, is one of the earliest exploited areas of province, named Yongchang in ancient time, with profound cultural and historic background. As early as 122 B.C., Emperor of Western Han Empire began to strengthen reign over southwest border regions, he carved out a post way connecting this area and set a county here, in Eastern Han era, 1900 years ago, county was upgraded to be an eparchy, and it was the second biggest through country then. In some ancient historic books, Banshan was recorded as a rich and fertile place, suitable for growing grain and raising silkworms, as well a distribution center of merchandises from different places.

Situated 593 kilometers from Kunming, 280 kilometers from Myanmar, Baoshan has its seat right on the way from provincial capital to border. The area of Baoshan is totaled at around 20000 square km, consisting of 4 counties, 1 city and 78 fertile basins, internally neighboring with Dehong, Lujiang, Dali and Lincang Prefectures, also abutting on Myanmar in its northwest. There are 2.4 million people living in Baoshan, including 37 ethnic groups, among which 13 are residents for generations. Additionally, in 29 countries or regions out of China, there also live more than 170 thousand overseas Baoshanners, they left hometown to make living and most already settled down aboard.

Baoshan has temperate climate, characteristic of both continental climate and oceanic climate. Yearly average temperature is 15 degrees Centigrade, lowest at 8 degrees and highest at 21 degrees, neither hot nor cold. Rainfall is plentiful, waterpower resource is rich and natural environment is of great vantage. Baoshan abounds with natural resources, the Gaoligong Nature Reserve is reputed as Green Treasure House, where more than 1400 higher plant species grow and more than 300 kinds of animals reside, besides, mineral resources as copper, iron, uranium, tin, gold, silver are also found to be abundant in Baoshan area.

The land in Baoshan is fertile, it passes for Tableland Flowing with Milk and Honey, favorable natural conditions is the guarantee of fruitful farming, Arabian coffee, sugar, tobacco, pepper, lychee, longan are all local produces, among which Arabian coffee produced in Baoshan is especially famous, which is regarded as the best-quality one in China.

As an area with background of long history and god-given natural conditions, ample tourism resources are endowed to Baoshan, wondrous dormant volcano clusters, geothermal phenomena, Gaoligong Nature Reserve, trace of ancient Southern Silk Road, Grand Nu River Canyons and colorful ethnic custom, etc. These even attracted the world-famous traveler Marco Polo 700 years ago, famous Chinese geographer Xu Xia Ke of Ming Dynasty, celebrated neoteric traditional Chinese painter Xu Bei Hong and other historical celebrities.
