Mengzi County

Mengzi County lies in the east of Honghe Hani Minority and Yi Minority's Autonomous Prefecture, is the political center and administrative capital of Honghe area, the county has an area of 2228 square kilometers and population of around 320 thousand, including ethnic groups as Yi, Miao, Zhuang, Hui, etc. Mengzi is on low-latitude tableland, under the influence of sub-tropical monsoon climate, average temperature fluctuates around 18 degrees and annual rainfall is around 815 mm. Mengzi is one of the 6 biggest basins of province, the biggest in southern Yunnan, agriculture is pretty developed, pomegranate is the most famous production in locality. County is rich in different kinds of minerals, silver, tin, zink, copper, phosphor, etc, among which the reserves of silver ranks on the top through whole country. Mengzi is a town of long history, 2100 years ago, in Han Dynasty, it was already a county of Yuzhou Prefecture, around 120 years ago, it was opened as a free trade port by Qing government, the first custom office, the first telegraph office, the first post office, the first foreign bank, the first joint-venture and the first foreign consulate of Yunnan were all started here. Convenient location is the advantage of Mengzi, 290 km from Kunming, provincial capital in the north, 168 km from Hekou, international port on China-Vietnam border in the south, 2 national highways crossed in county, and 2 international railways leading to Southeast Asia go through its territory, Mengzi is becming the transportation hub of southeastern Yunnan.
