Yuanyang County

Yuanyang is a small county approximately 150 km from Jianshui, situated in the south of Honghe Prefecture, surrounded by Jianshui in the north, Honghe in the west, Jinping in the east and Luchun in the south. Its area measures 2190 square km, all mountainous and inhabited by ethnic groups like Hani, Yi, Dai, Miao, Yao and Zhuang, population is totaled at 360 thousand. Climate of Yuanyang is complicated, due to up-and-down terrains, the highest elevation hits 2939 meters, the lowest only 144 meters, it may be sub-tropical in the river valley, but temperate on hillside or mountain top, annual temperature fluctuates around 16 degrees and yearly rainfall estimates at 900 mm. Fog is the most often-seen weather in Yuanyang area, especially on mountains, foggy days may account for half of one year, according to local people, and normally when fog envelops the location rain comes in company, it happens very often sun shines on one side of mountain but overcast or raining only several km away on the other side. Agriculture is the mainstay of local economy, more than 94% of the population are farmers, through generations, Hani people cultivated thousands upon thousands of rice terraces on hillsides or in valleys around their homes, providing local people with abundant food, as well offering breath-taking view to visitors. Besides the magnificent scenery created by local ethnic people, ethnic minorities themselves and their different ways of life are also great attractions to travelers, tourism is becoming a booming business in this area.
